The Mental Health Research (MHR) Incubator is committed to building capacity in mental health research by enabling researchers to progress their careers.
We seek to empower researchers and professionals with the knowledge, connections and confidence to pursue their passions and work towards research independence. Through this, we help make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals affected by mental health problems and addiction.
Through our programmes, we aim to meet five aims:
Support development to research independence
Expand mental health research network
Promote cross sector and industry skills
Enhance inter-disciplinary collaboration
Support under-represented researchers
[The Incubator] has had a meaningful impact on my sense of professional identity and belonging within the mental health research community. It has provided a supportive, low‑barrier space to explore ideas, test my thinking, and learn from peers across disciplines and career stages. This has increased my confidence to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, to see my work as part of a wider research ecosystem, and to pursue opportunities that I may have thought were out of reach.

SEED FUND
As part of our mission of increasing capacity in mental health researchers, we have established the MHR Incubator Seed Fund scheme. We recognise the importance of securing small grants funding, as part of establishing a track record as an early career researcher.
Our Seed Fund empowers alumni and current programme participants to collaborate with others and set up new initiatives. Participants are awarded a maximum of £1,000 per project, to carry out activities that increase capacity in mental health research in the UK. Projects are required to support the career development of mental health and/or addiction researchers in the UK, in addition to encouraging and enabling research collaborations.
