Addictions Internship
I had been working with the Addictions Research Group at the University of South Wales on my dissertation for an MSc in Clinical Psychology and recently graduated when the opportunity of the internship arose. I was extremely excited to hear about the project and internship being offered as I was looking to start a career in Psychology research but at the time was not sure about how to go about this.
The skills I have developed as part of this internship, such as learning how to implement a new project, designing protocols for multiple projects, completing funding applications and building on my existing knowledge of completing ethics applications, managing data and participant welfare and feedback have been extremely useful to me in pursuing a career in research.
I was in the process of accepting alternative employment at the time of receiving this opportunity and I completely fell in love with being a researcher in Psychology and this changed my outlook and career path completely. The funding received for my internship has completely changed my life and given me a solid path to a career that I thoroughly enjoy and am excited about.
As such, I have now applied to complete a PhD working on addictions treatment within the Psychology and Criminology pathways. I am extremely grateful to the Mental Health Research Incubator for this opportunity provided through their funding.
About the authors
Genevieve Griffiths will be completing a PhD at the University of South Wales from October 2026. Her work will focus on the continuity of alcohol use disorder treatment during transitions into custodial settings.
